The NSW Department of Health said on Wednesday (Dec 1) that a man who arrived in Sydney from Nigeria had been diagnosed with Newcastle pneumonia and preliminary tests showed he was infected with a variant of the Omicron strain, potentially increasing the number of cases of Omciron variant Newcastle in NSW to six.
He was in the community and flew on the same flight as the fifth woman with Omicron,” the health ministry said.
There were 251 new confirmed cases of Omicron in NSW on Wednesday. Health Minister Brad Hazzard said the provincial government was not considering another closure of the city, saying it should change its thinking beyond the number of confirmed cases to the rate of hospitalisation and serious illnesses, and did not want to take drastic measures to deal with the new variant of the virus.
